The Group: New Kids On The Block
Birthdate: Father's Day 1985 (this is the day the group was formed)
Birthplace: Maurice Starr's in home studio in Roxbury, Massachusetts
Facts: The group was formed from a city-wide talent search done by Maurice Starr and Mary Alford. Donnie was the first member found and originally auditioned with younger brother Mark who dropped out quickly due to lack of interest in the type of music the group was to perform. Donnie's rapping skills and moonwalk Michael Jackson style proved he would be an asset to the group. Donnie next recruited good friend and schoolmate Danny Wood who brought both his talent for dancing and deep bass voice. Next was Jordan known for his good looks and ability to sing from his days in the church choir. He suggested his older brother Jonathan as a candidate for the group because of his good looks, charm and choir singing. Then, Maurice and Mary decided they needed a younger Michael Jackson type to round out the group and found that at a local theater production company when they contacted Cathy McLoughlin. She suggested young Joseph McIntyre. Originally seen as an outsider and picked on by the older boys, Joe was going to quit the group but Donnie, with his winning personality and ability to charm persuaded him to stay and they all became close friends and brothers to themselves. Their first album was a commercial failure and sold only a few copies originally. Their next album Hangin' Tough in 1988 would turn the tide and start their rise to fame producing the #1 hit "I'll Be Loving You (Forever)" and other hits such as "Hangin' Tough", "Cover Girl" and "Please Don't Go Girl". The next album, "Merry, Merry Christmas" set a new height in Holiday albums sold, then came the #1 smash album "Step By Step" that topped the charts for a whopping 13 weeks and sold more than 14 million copies. The kids released a remix album later that same year entitled "No More Games" that also sold commercially well. Touring for a few years more, the guys decided to do one more album "Face The Music" before their untimely split in 1994. The guys all went on to solo careers as singers, actors and real estate developers as well as becoming fathers and getting married. Fortunately, in 2008, the group decided to give in to the fans demands to reunite and rock the house one more time. Their commercial release of the album "The Block" was well received by the fans new and old. The guys are currently on the second leg of their US and International tour and are selling out arenas all over the world!
